The Central Yavapai Fire District maintains a Reserve Firefighter Program to supplement its full-time force. All reserves must successfully complete the District’s Recruit Academy and pass the District’s physical fitness requirements. In addition to these requirements, they must also obtain and maintain a CPR certification and obtain a basic Wildland Firefighting certification before end of probation. Reserves continue training throughout the year by attending quarterly drills and working a required 12 hour ride along per quarter on an engine/truck company in addition to working auxiliary manning as needed. Reserves also respond to large incidents as needed, providing additional resources.
The Reserve Academy is an intense 9 weeks of training. Reserves are trained in:
- Fire Suppression
- EMS Skills
- Hazardous Materials
- Wildland Operations
- District Policies & Procedures
In addition to classroom learning, reserves participate in rigorous physical fitness training, practical scenarios, continuous testing and evaluation, and acquire real-life experience through controlled burns.
To be eligible to test for the CYFD Reserve Program, applicants must:
- Reside within the Fire District boundaries, which include the City of Prescott.
- Be a minimum of 18 years of age.
- Have a valid Arizona driver’s license.
- Not have had a felony (within previous 10 years) or misdemeanor (within previous 3 years) convictions involving moral turpitude.
- Be insurable by District insurance carrier for operation of District vehicles.
